The systematic scientific investigation of human perception began
over 130 years ago, yet relatively little is known about how we
identify complex patterns. A major reason for this is that
historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic
processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple
stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion,
attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before
addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and
classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built
a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What
seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the
recognition problem - a broad theoretical structure to direct
future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective
in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to
review existing contributions to our understanding of
classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and
directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas:
complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns;
multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern
recognition.
This landmark resource, the first fully-based on the authoritative
NABRE translation, contains the trustworthy study notes, expanded
essays, and informational sidebars which have guided and informed
students and general readers for 25 years. In this new edition,
one-third of the Reading Guide materials are new, and all of the
other Guides have been reviewed and revised by their original
authors. The extensive Reading Guide, the focal point of this
volume, leads the reader through the Scriptures, book by book.
References and background information are clearly laid out to guide
the reader to a fuller understanding of the Bible. New to this
edition is a more extensive treatment of the biblical background,
including history and archeology. Other outstanding features
include: a 15-page glossary of special terms and complete Sunday
and weekday lectionary readings for the liturgical years of the
Church. Thirty-two beautiful pages of full-color Oxford Bible Maps
come with a place-name index for easy reference. Perfect for both
higher education and clergy, Bible study and general readers, The
Catholic Study Bible is an essential resource for both experienced
students and first-time readers. The New American Bible Revised
Edition: The New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) brings to
culmination the work of nearly 100 scholars, including translators,
editors, and a subcommittee of Catholic bishops who provided
extensive review of the biblical text over a period of many years.
The NABRE is the first major amendment to the New American Bible
translation since 1991. It features: *The first update of the Old
Testament since 1970, taking into account recent archaeological and
textual discoveries. *Complete revision of the Psalter.

Like its predecessors, "Once Upon a Time" and "A Place in the Sun",
"Poolside with Slim Aarons" offers images of jet-setters and the
wealthy, of beautiful, glittering people living the glamorous life.
Yet this new collection of stunning photographs of the rich and
well-connected 'doing attractive things' in their favourite
playgrounds has a new twist. The main character is pools and
everything that goes with them - magnificent, suntanned bodies,
well-oiled skin, bikini-clad women, yachts, summer cocktails,
sumptuous buffets, spectacular locations and most of all fun.
"Poolside with Slim Aarons" is not so much a Who's Who of society,
aristocracy and celebrity - although C. Z. Guest, Lily Pulitzer,
Cheryl Tiegs, Peter Beard and many who have appeared in the
previous books are here - as it is about leisure time and how the
rich make use of it. This is a more intimate peek into very private
lives, to which Slim Aarons was given unprecedented access in the
fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties. From the Caribbean to
Italy and Mexico to Monaco, "Poolside with Slim Aarons" whisks the
reader away to an exclusive club where taste, style, luxury and
grandeur prevail.

Learn J. Paul Getty's secrets on making money and getting rich in
this "excellent How To book from a $$$ and sense man" (Kirkus
Reviews). There are plenty of books on making money by men who
haven't made much. But if J. Paul Getty, who Fortune magazine
called "the richest man in the world," doesn't know how, who does?
Here the billionaire businessman discloses the secrets of his
success-and provides a blueprint for those who want to follow in
his footsteps. And he goes beyond the matter of making money to the
question of what to do with it. "Getty says it: 'You can be
rich.'"-New York Herald Tribune "Aimed at the rising young business
executive."-Albany Times-Union
This collection of essays by scholars from five nations - the
United States, Great Britain, Australia, France, and Russia - makes
several major contributions to the understanding of Stalinist
terror in the 1930s. The essays explore in greater depth than
before the background of the terror and patterns of persecution,
while providing more empirically founded and substantiated
estimates of the numbers of Stalin's victims. Some contributors tap
unexplored or underutilized source materials while others have
taken advantage of glasnost and the opening of Soviet archives and
libraries for the years of the terror to draw on freshly available
archival and secondary materials. Many of the essays are informed
by distinct trends in social and political history, and they
approach Stalinist terror with fresh methods and perspectives. The
volume supplements works that have focused exclusively on Stalin's
personality by concentrating instead on preconditions, mentalities,
economics, and specific groups. Although Stalin remains the central
personality in the terror, other leaders, institutions, and social
groups played important roles, and by analyzing them the essays in
the volume help to provide a more complete and balanced view of the
phenomenon of the terror as a whole.
This is a study of the structure of the Soviet Communist Party in
the 1930s. Based upon archival and published sources, the work
describes the events in the Bolshevik Party leading up to the Great
Purges of 1937 1938. Professor Getty concludes that the party
bureaucracy was chaotic rather than totalitarian, and that local
officials had relative autonomy within a considerably fragmented
political system. The Moscow leadership, of which Stalin was the
most authoritarian actor, reacted to social and political processes
as much as instigating them. Because of disputes, confusion, and
inefficiency, they often promoted contradictory policies. Avoiding
the usual concentration on Stalin's personality, the author puts
forward the controversial hypothesis that the Great Purges occurred
not as the end product of a careful Stalin plan, but rather as the
bloody but ad hoc result of Moscow's incremental attempts to
centralise political power.

The Bible is made up of 66 books that tell the magnificent story of
God’s redemptive work in Christ. In this new audio CD of
the full Bible, that story comes alive in a fresh way through the
voice of award-winning modern hymn writer Kristyn Getty.
Sing! has grown from Keith and Kristyn Getty's passion for
congregational singing; it's been formed by their traveling and
playing and listening and discussing and learning and teaching all
over the world. And in writing it, they have five key aims: to
discover why we sing and the overwhelming joy and holy privilege
that comes with singing ; to consider how singing impacts our
hearts and minds and all of our lives; to cultivate a culture of
family singing in our daily home life; to equip our churches for
wholeheartedly singing to the Lord and one another as an expression
of unity; to inspire us to see congregational singing as a radical
witness to the world. They have also added a few "bonus tracks" at
the end with some more practical suggestions for different groups
who are more deeply involved with church singing. God intends for
this compelling vision of His people singing -- a people joyfully
joining together in song with brothers and sisters around the world
and around his heavenly throne -- to include you. He wants you,he
wants us, to sing.
When life (in a global pandemic) imitates art . . . Van Gogh's
Starry Night made out of spaghetti? Cat with a Pearl Earring? Frida
Kahlo self-portraits with pets and toilet paper? While the world
reeled from the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19),
thousands of people around the globe, inspired by challenges from
Getty and other museums, raided toy chests, repurposed pantry
items, and enlisted family, roommates, and animals to re-create
famous works of art at home. Astonishing in their creativity, wit,
and ingenuity, these creations remind us of the power of art to
unite us and bring joy during troubled times. Off the Walls:
Inspired Re-Creations of Iconic Artworks celebrates these
imaginative re-creations, bringing highlights from this challenge
together in one whimsical, irresistible volume. Getty Publications
will donate all profits from the sales of this book to Artist
Relief, an emergency initiative offering resources to artists
across the United States.
